Why Playoffs?
The expansion of the World Cup to 48 nations has prompted FIFA to rethink the allocation of spots among continents. Africa, previously limited to 5 representatives, will now benefit from 9 direct qualifiers, plus one additional spot to be secured through intercontinental playoffs.
The African playoffs were established to determine this last spot. They will feature the best runners-up from the qualifying groups to identify the nation that will represent the continent in the global playoff tournament.
Does winning the African playoffs mean direct qualification for the World Cup?
No, a victory in the first round of the African playoffs does not guarantee a place in the World Cup. In reality, it is merely an additional step.
The four nations involved: Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo, and Gabon finished among the best runners-up in their groups. They will face off in November 2025 in the African playoffs.
The winner will not be automatically qualified: they must then participate in the FIFA playoff tournament scheduled for March 2026, against teams from other continents (Asia, South America, Oceania, CONCACAF).
This tournament will determine the final teams qualified for the World Cup 2026, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
