Morocco is entering a new phase of its digital transformation. After years of technical and regulatory preparation, the deployment of 5G is about to become a reality. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) has finalized the licensing process for the three operators — Morocco Telecom, Orange Morocco, and Inwi — paving the way for a national digital revolution.
A gradual launch starting late 2025
According to the latest information, the commercial launch of 5G is set to begin in November 2025, first in major cities like Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Tanger, followed by a gradual rollout across the entire territory.
This deployment is part of an ambitious vision: Digital Morocco 2030, which aims to make the country an African model of innovation and connectivity. The government plans a coverage of 45% of the population by the end of 2026, aiming for nearly 85% by 2030.
Colossal investments for a major impact
The deployment of 5G represents one of the most significant technological projects in the Kingdom. Estimated investments will reach nearly 80 billion dirhams by 2035, with an economic impact projected between 4 and 6 billion dollars by 2030.
Beyond the numbers, 5G is set to profoundly transform several sectors:
-
Industry and logistics : automation, predictive maintenance, connected transport.
-
Health : the rise of telemedicine and remote diagnostics.
-
Education : immersive learning and augmented reality.
-
Smart cities : intelligent management of energy, transport, and security.
Concrete uses for citizens
For the general public, 5G promises download speeds up to 10 times faster than 4G, with almost nonexistent latency and a stable connection even in dense areas..
It will also provide new digital experiences: seamless 4K streaming, lag-free online gaming, ultra-high-definition video conferencing, and simultaneous connections for numerous devices.
Challenges to overcome
Despite its potential, 5G raises several challenges:
-
Cost of compatible devices : 5G smartphones remain expensive for a portion of the population.
-
Uneven coverage : deployment will initially focus on major urban areas before reaching rural zones.
-
Digital sovereignty : data security and control of strategic infrastructures will be crucial.
-
Creation of local uses : for 5G to be a development driver, it will be essential to stimulate startups, services, and “Made in Morocco” applications.
A strategic lever for the Moroccan economy
5G represents not only a technological leap but also a vector for national competitiveness.
It will attract more foreign investments, support the rise of Moroccan startups, and enhance the Kingdom's position in global value chains.
As the country prepares to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup, the deployment of 5G will position Morocco among the technologically advanced nations on the continent.
A digital revolution underway
5G will not be an end in itself, but a springboard towards a more connected, innovative, and inclusive society.
If the deployment is carried out transparently and collaboratively, it will mark a new digital era for Morocco, where technology becomes a driver of economic, social, and cultural progress.
The countdown has begun: Morocco is about to leap into the future.
